World Islands or World is an artificial archipelago of small islands located in the waters of the Persian Gulf, 4.0 kilometres off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dubai World Islands is a collection of 300 private islands in the shape of continents world map, divided into four categories – private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. The project was conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and developed by Nakheel Properties. The World Islands is located 4 kilometres off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid at approximately 25 degrees 13 North and 55 degrees 10 East.
Dubai World Islands construction of the 300 islands began in 2003. Islands in the archipelago range from 14,000 to 42,000 square metres (150,000 to 450,000 sq ft) in area. Distances between islands average 100 metres (330 ft); they are constructed from 321,000,000 cubic metres (1.1336008018×1010 cu ft) of sand and 386 million tons of rock. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine or air transport. World Islands Dubai overall development costs were estimated at $14 billion USD in 2005.
